U-value calculator for calculating heat loss through construction elements like basement walls, external walls, slab-on-ground floors, suspended floors and roofs. The spreadsheet is automated as much as possible, providing easy to use tool for effortless calculations that normally would be complex and long. Includes an extensive database of materials selectable through drop-down menus to minimise design time. As a result it really makes U-value calculations a quick and simple task and it can be easily used by architects, builders and even regular home owners who just want to check a potential benefit of the extra insulation they always thought of adding.
This spreadsheet was specially developed for Windows and Mac users.
- User friendly and very easy to use;
- A clear and easy to read output; - All input and output is on a single page making it very easy to follow and make adjustments; - Any changes are immediately reflected in the calculated U-value and can be readily assessed; - Covers the following Element Types: basement wall, external wall, slab-on-ground floor, suspended slab, typical floor, roof (including warm roof); - Automatically selects the correct calculation method and shows relevant input options; - Calculates elements of up to 10 layers; - Allows for up to 4 bridged layers (up to 2 bridged layers for warm roofs); - Includes resistance calculations for high and low emissivity airspaces; - Includes allowance for corrections for airgaps and penetrating fasteners; - Includes allowance for edge insulation for slab-on-ground floor calculations; - Includes under-floor resistance calculations for suspended and slab-on-ground floors (in accordance with BS EN ISO 13370); - Calculates mass of wall (as required by Part E: Resistance to the passage of sound); - Covers warm roof calculations (in accordance with BS EN ISO 13789) where two parts have to be calculated separately; - Extensive, editable Material Database (based on Standards, manufacturers' specifications and resources available on-line); - Two versions are available: one for Microsoft Windows users and one for Apple Mac users; - Design is based on BS EN ISO 6946:1997, 13370:1998, 13789:2007, BRE 443 and 497. (Note: macros must be enabled for proper working of the spreadsheet. Follow instructions in this video)
This spreadsheet is independent of the industry of building materials. As a result it was possible to include an extensive database of building materials from various manufacturers. Data of these products is gathered from Standards, manufacturers' specifications and on-line resources. If you want your products to appear in this spreadsheet (free of charge) then please contact me.
There is a subtle difference in appearance of user interface and printout. This is because drop-down menus are used for easy and quick selection of layer materials. These have drop-buttons which are not visible on printouts. Have a look at these print screens:

System Requirements: |
To run the Single-User Licensed version you require:
- Microsoft Windows Excel version 2007 and above;
(Note: the Single-User spreadsheet will not run on Mac due to unsupported activation procedure)
To run the Company Licensed version you require either:
- Microsoft Windows Excel version 2007 and above;
- Microsoft Mac Excel version 2004, 2011 and above. If unsure then see whether the FREE version works.
Technical Advice: If you have enabled macros and still cannot use the drop-down menu to change materials then it is probably because of a faulty Windows Update. Solution HERE.
