Steel Portal Frame Sizing Spreadsheet to BS5950
(Based on Appendix A in SCI Publication P252) Available for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac users.
(Based on Appendix A in SCI Publication P252) Available for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac users.
Very easy to use spreadsheet for sizing rafters, stanchions and haunches in single span portal frames at preliminary design stage. Based on Method 1 in Appendix A in SCI Publication P252: Design of single-span steel portal frames to BS 5950-1: 2000 - preliminary design. Saves you time finding required sizes in tables and writing up a calculation page.
Spreadsheet is for estimating purpose only and detailed design should still be carried out. Appendix A in SCI Publication P252 does not take account of stability at the ultimate limit state, deflections at the serviceability limit state. This spreadsheet was specially developed for Windows and Mac users.
- A clear and easy to read output (all on a single page);
- Quick summary of results; - A diagram with member sizes and frame dimensions; - Saves time going through tables and writing up a calculation page; - Based on Method 1 in Appendix A in SCI Publication P252: Design of single-span steel portal frames to BS 5950-1: 2000 - preliminary design. (Note: macros must be enabled for proper working of the spreadsheet. Follow instructions in this video)
- Wind load is based on ground roughness category 2 with a basic wind speed of up to 52m/s. Where dominant openings exist the results should be treated with caution;
- Steel grade is S275; - Haunch length is 10% of the span of the frame; - Roof pitch is 6 degrees; - Rafter load is the total factored dead load (including self weight) and factored imposed load; - Given member sizes are suitable for rapid preliminary design or for estimating purposes only; - Results can be used for multiple span frames of equal or unequal spans provided a suitable valley column is used (not covered in the spreadsheet); - Stability at the ultimate limit state and deflection at the serviceability limit state is not accounted for.
