Imperial Paper Sizes - ANSI Paper Series
The ANSI Paper Series is used in United States. It adopts ANSI/ASME Y14.1 standard which is based on standard 8 ½ in x 11 in “letter” size known as ANSI A paper size.
Then ANSI Paper Series was introduced in 1996 by American National Standards Institute.
The largest paper size in this series, i.e. E, has an area of around 0.97m2. All smaller paper sizes thereafter (D, C, B and A) have half the area of the preceding paper size. This is achieved by halving the preceding paper size across the larger dimension - this is similar like in the ANSI standard ISO 216. However, the use of an arbitrary aspect ratio means that this series has two alternating aspect ratios.
The ANSI Paper Series is based “letter” size which is the most popular paper size in the series measuring 8.5in x 11in (215.9mm x 279.4mm). It is widely used together with other non-ANSI sizes like government-letter 8.0in x 10.5in (203.2mm x 266.7mm), legal 8.5in x 14in (215.9mm x 355.6mm) and junior legal 8.0in x 5.0in (203.2mm x 127mm) paper sizes.
The below diagrams are to give paper measurements and visually explain how each of the sizes in this series is created.
